Mental Retardation: Not a Laughing Matter

tawa
The other day in science class, I had to present a project based upon a genetic disorder.  The disorder had some topics that I wasn’t sure how my class was going to react to so I decided to not say them aloud.

But there were some topics I was sure my class could handle.  As I was presenting, I came across the term “mental retardation”.  To me, this is a serious matter that is not a laughing matter.  But of course , there were kids who laughed.  Not only did they laugh at that term, they laughed at pictures of people who have genetic disorders.  I showed the Elephant Man and someone with Down Syndrome.

This really got to me.  I started thinking that day why they would laugh at such things.  How could they be so mean to laugh at people who have to go through life being made fun of lots of times.  But then, I thought maybe no one taught them not to be so harsh because it could have been them with the disorder.

It’s wonderful that at least you are so sensitive and mature. Empathy is not something that everyone has, but it can be nurtured and and your classmates grow and learn and experience hardships, they may grow to understand and respect how others feel. I like that you chose to write about this experience, because through reading your article, some of your peers may stop and think if they should join in the laughter or repeat the mean joke next time.

    Great job.

There exists a significant controversy these days and lots of warmed up views as to whether or not to take delivery of the actual ##keyword## . In case you obtain it? Just what aspects should you think about before making deciding? The goal of this information is to ponder the good qualities, negatives as well as options you might have.
