You’re so right about dolls always looking the same, with too-blond hair and WAY too small waists. A lot of people care only about their looks, and I’m glad that you are able to notice true inner beauty.

What a wonderful, insightful piece! As the Campus Kid big sister to my brown 3 1/2 year old, I hope that you share these positive, grounded values with her. Luckily, she isn’t into American Girl or Barbie yet, but she is starting to notice “color.” She told me the other day that she’s “brown like daddy.” When I asked her what I am, first she told me “yellow,” then she changed it to light brown. I explained that we are all beautiful. You make sure you help me spread the word, girlfriend! Good Job!
