A bearded man is walking in a desert. There’s an odd machine, and when the man bends over to look at it, the contraption breaks a rock near his hand, injuring him. As the machine slowly begins to sink, a creature the color of sand approaches the man and heals him. The unusual story concludes with the guy’s legs flailing in the air while he digs through a wall of dirt, looking for the being that saved his life.

This is a typical music video from the music group Grizzly Bear, a band that meshes poetic lyrics, beautiful harmonies, and bizarre ideas to create a genre of music that blows one’s mind away. For those of you who haven’t heard of this alternative music group, Grizzly Bear is a memorable, unconventional band that has performed on TV and radio, Paul Simon, and Feist and even has a soundtrack on Twilight’s latest “New Moon” CD.

What makes their music so mesmerizing, so exceptional, is that the songs they write are captivating, but not mainstream. Their quirkiness and appeal are matched only by their music videos. Just like the band’s music, their videos exhibit a high level of creativity, humor, and engagement. They have a new CD out called “Veckatimest”, which has one of my favorite songs, “Two Weeks.” If you get the chance, check it out.

Have you heard the hype? The whispers? It is finally here! The long awaited sequel of Twilight is here. New Moon is scheduled to hit theatres Friday at 12:01 AM. But the excitement among girls is not mutual to the other gender. To be honest, us guys could care less about the Twilight craze sweeping the nation.

The vampire/werewolf/human love story took the world by surprise when author Stephanie Meyers turned her dream into a novel adored by girls everywhere. Now, I haven’t read any of the books or seen the movies, but what possibly could draw girls to a movie about werewolves and vampires? Aren’t girls supposed to be afraid of those types of things?

I just don’t understand how a movie about those fictional characters can be enjoyable. I have seen a couple previews. All of a sudden a guy jumps in the air and turns into a werewolf to save his friend, or girlfriend, I’m not sure. What is this?

And then this is the worst part. Now every girl is on the prowl for her Edward. I’m sorry to disappoint you, but my name is Jimmy not Edward! Oh, and in case you were still wondering, I’m not a vampire, nor will I ever be!

I don’t understand if girls really like the movie or if they just like it because their friends do. I feel like this always happens. Like the Jonas Brothers. I saw them on Disney Channel several years ago before they were popular and no one thought anything of them. But then it all changed after one girl fell in love with them, it started a chain reaction. Now, they seem to be recognized more than the president!

This is what happened with Twilight. It wasn’t talked about to the capacity it is today until a select group of girls liked it. Now, that is all anyone talks about. Theatres have sold out their midnight shows already and the Twilight craze is far from over. But I can tell you, it is bypassing us guys!

We don’t care for Twilight, and to tell you the truth, we think those crazy Twilight fans are slightly wacky! Like I said, I can’t fully judge the series because I haven’t seen or read it. But it seems the love for the movie by so many is definitely uncalled for!

Everyone knows the word “twilight”. But to most girls that word doesn’t refer to the time of day when it’s light out and you can see the moon. Twilight is a best-selling book series which has led to super-hyped movies! But what IS all the hype about? Sometimes even I, a faithful Twilight fan, cannot understand it all at once.

The Twilight saga actually is a great, romantic, adventurous, and mysterious series. There are even some guys who have read the books and actually enjoyed it, like one of my friends at school. Most guys write off the phenomenon, including the novels, because the whole thing seems so ridiculous. But, it’s just the movies that really are changing their minds, not the books.

Of course, for us a girls, a huge appeal to the movies is the eye candy. All the guys of Twilight are extremely hot, all of us know that. Whether you’re loving Robert Pattinson’s famous “Edward” hair or Taylor Lautner showing off his rock hard six-pack abs, it’s pretty tempting. Though, the story line isn’t as much concentrated on.

The movie follows the book for the most part. But like any adaption, it skips scenes, it adds scenes, it shortens important scenes and changes others. Like, in the first Twilight movie, Bella admits she knows Edward is a vampire on a car ride home from Port Angeles. In the movie, she tells Edward what she knows in a clearing in a dark forest, in a dramatic, intense scene. Sure, it’s a good scene, but to faithful Twilight readers, it takes away from the true roots of the story.

The hype over “New Moon” is a combination of many things. For readers, there are great expectations for it to live up to the book. For the girls who are “gaga” over the guys, they’re hoping to see a lot of skin. And for the people who saw the first movie and thought it was “just okay,” they’re hoping the second will be better.

I’m excited to see what the new director will bring to the table. But I’m not expecting much more than the first movie. I’m definintley going to see it, but I probably won’t stay up all night for the midnight showing.

Some critics who’ve already seen “New Moon” say it’s pretty bad. But I don’t think that matters. Most Twilight fans are pretty faithful and won’t care about the reviews. I’m not surprised the critics don’t like it. The people who love the movies aren’t the adults or the parents, but the screaming teenage girls.

So, maybe the hype over Twilight isn’t about how good the actual movie or plotline turn out to be. Whether you love the books or love the guys, everyone will be drawn to “New Moon” differently.

I’m not sure how I’ll like it. But I have new hope since a different director is shining a new light on the movie series.
